Vietnam has expanded its agricultural exports to China by signing new export protocols during the recent visit of China's Party General Secretary and President Xi Jinping. These agreements cover passion fruit and chilli, facilitating further negotiations on other products.
The protocols build on earlier agreements for items like coconuts, watermelons, and durians. Six fruits, including dragon fruit and rambutan, continue under less formal arrangements.
Chilli and passion fruit exports, previously limited to pilot programmes, can now be exported through formal channels with broader access. Nguyen Thi Lan Huong, Chairwoman of Viet Phuc Group, stated that the pilot phase restrictions have been lifted, expanding trade opportunities. She noted that food safety and quarantine measures were already in place.
Huong cautioned that China is tightening regulations, aligning with markets like Japan and Korea, requiring professional and transparent practices from Vietnamese producers. For chilli products, adherence to pesticide regulations and safe farming is crucial for market access.
Nguyen Quang Hieu, Deputy Director of the Plant Protection Department, stated that Vietnam must ensure consistency in product quality and production capacity to secure and expand its market share in China.
