During the two weeks ending May 8, 2025, most major retailers promoted Cinco de Mayo-themed produce, featuring items such as cilantro, avocados, jalapeños, onions, corn, Roma tomatoes, limes, lemons, cucumbers, and mangoes. In addition, both conventional and organic strawberries received widespread advertising in anticipation of Mother's Day and the Kentucky Derby.
Vidalia onions were frequently advertised, with white and red varieties appearing more often than usual. Seasonal store sections also focused on Mother's Day floral arrangements and gift offerings.
This week's total number of ads reached 286,395, remaining steady compared to last week's 286,884. Compared to the same period last year, ad volume increased by 8 per cent to 265,171. Fruit remained the most advertised category, accounting for 146,569 ads or 51 per cent of the total. Vegetables followed with 111,924 ads, or 39 per cent. Onions and potatoes were featured in 23,149 ads, representing 8 per cent of the total. Herbs appeared in 7,103 ads (2 per cent), ornamentals in 1,680, and hemp in 3,073. Organic produce accounted for 31,958 ads, making up 11 per cent of all advertising.
Among items with 3,000 or more ads, the only significant fruit price increase this week was for white seedless grapes, which rose by 26 per cent compared to the same week in 2024. No significant price decreases were reported for fruit. For onions and potatoes, red onions dropped by 18 per cent per pound, and Russet potatoes (5 lb. bag) decreased by 15 per cent, with no notable price increases. In the vegetable category, there were no significant price hikes, but jalapeños fell by 15 per cent, cilantro by 13 per cent, and Roma tomatoes by 11 per cent.
