US (CT): Fire at Somers greenhouse under control, say officials

Strong winds and a lack of water supply caused heavy flames to spread at a greenhouse in Somers, say fire officials.

The flames began Friday at 7:38 p.m. at Grower Direct Farms, a wholesale greenhouse on 164 Hampden Road. Upon arrival, the Somers Fire Department saw heavy flames spreading throughout the complex.

Despite the high winds and lack of water supply challenges, Somers fire officials and more than 20 mutual aid partners worked tirelessly to contain the blaze.

Officials say one firefighter had minor injuries and was evaluated at Johnson Memorial Hospital. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection also responded to the scene to assess the area for potential environmental hazards.
