Belize halts vegetable import permits to support local farmers

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) has halted the issuance of import permits for various vegetables in Belize. The suspension, effective immediately, covers lettuce, purple, white, and yellow onions, potatoes, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, and celery.

This measure aligns with reports of sufficient local supply to meet consumer demand. The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) will enforce compliance with this suspension. Under the BAHA Act, Chapter 211 of Belizean law, individuals found importing these vegetables without permits may face prosecution, resulting in fines, imprisonment, or both.

The government encourages Belizeans to support local farmers by purchasing homegrown produce. The initiative aims to enhance the agricultural sector and provide economic stability for farmers in the country. The focus is on fostering self-reliance and supporting the efforts of Belize's farming community.
