'Crunchy' by Fellini Patrizio

Crispy lettuce is now in production 12 months a year in Italy

"From Romagna to Calabria, through Apulia and Lazio, we now produce Crunchy Salad exclusively in Italy, on the farms of our cooperative members," said Andrea Pignato and Luca Pollarini of the Fellini Patrizio Sales Department.

"Crunchy has two characteristics," they explain, "because it combines both crispness and sweetness. It is sold at the guaranteed minimum weight of 300 grams per pack and the packaging is eye-catching thanks to the color combination."

Several major retail chains have tested it and added it to their permanent assortment. "Think of it as Romana crossed with Iceberg. The leaves are spoon-shaped and lend themselves to any combination. The whole leaves can be used as "trays" for finger food or cut to make a regular salad. The flavor is sweet and tastes good without dressing or vinaigrette."

Pignato also takes stock of the current market situation for vegetables: "Some crops are doing quite well, while others are in crisis, such as fennel and cabbage. There are some sales, but the prices are low. In the case of cabbage, the problem is the overlap of products from different regions. After a very good start, the prices for fennel have become unprofitable since the end of January."

The current weather trend is making the transplanting of spring and summer crops more difficult: "Lettuce, celery, and other references cannot be transplanted according to the usual schedule because of the weather. This could lead to a deficit at harvest time," he concludes.
