Staten Island high school students got a lesson in environmental technology and sustainability when they harvested vegetables in their new hands-on green classroom.
Last month, more than a dozen freshmen and sophomores at Port Richmond High School harvested lettuce, kale and herbs in the green classroom with soil-less technology. The practical experience with urban food production prepares students to enter careers in science, technology, nutrition and environmental studies.
The classroom is one of 22 hydroponic labs that the New York Power Authority (NYPA) has supported in New York City this year.
The students joined Principal Andrew Greenfield to harvest products from the hydroponic systems designed by the non-profit NY Sun Works — made up of seeding stations, a tower garden, hanging vines and a composting station.
