Kelta farmers in Papua New Guinea expand vegetable distribution network to support local growers

A farming collective in Papua New Guinea's Western Highlands Province is engaging with local growers to enhance vegetable distribution channels. The Kelta community farmers, located near Mt Hagen City, have urged fellow farmers in the province to collaborate by selling their fresh produce to them.

According to Kelta community lead farmer John Pup, they have been distributing vegetables to markets across the country since the previous year. "We would like to supply quality fresh vegetables to our markets and our markets will be an avenue for other farmers to sell their fresh produce to us, the Kelta community farmers," Mr. Pup stated.

The Kelta community comprises over 70 farmers cultivating a variety of crops such as potatoes, English potatoes, cabbages, broccoli, and taro. Mr. Pup has sourced taros from farmers in the Dei and Tambul Nebilyer districts for market distribution.

He mentioned that Kelta farmers are continuously expanding their agricultural operations, with new plantings occurring monthly to meet market demands. The community's secured market connections enable them to generate consistent revenue from their produce.
