Tomato grower demolishes greenhouse to build new one

At Tomatenkwekerij Hermans Tomana in Rijkevorsel, a greenhouse has been demolished, only to build a new one. Grower Kim Hermans had his oldest greenhouse, from 2008, demolished. More than 4 hectares of greenhouse were involved. Mustang Demolition took care of the demolition.

Meanwhile, construction of the new greenhouse has already started, the grower said on Monday morning. Van Amelsvoort is building the greenhouse. The new greenhouse will be higher (6.5 meters) and it will have AR-coated glass, something that was not on the old greenhouse.

The screen installation in the new greenhouse will be provided by Alweco, the heating by Peter Bossaerts, water and electricity by Hortiplan and the gutters will be supplied by Meteor Systems.

When the new greenhouse is finished, Kim plans to put an autumn crop of tomatoes in it. In his other greenhouse, from 2015, cultivation continues. Hermans Tomana will have an area of 7.8 hectares at its disposal, once the latest greenhouse is back in place.

Building permit
The reason for the demolition of the not-so-old greenhouse lies in the fact that this step allows the grower to upgrade his existing acreage. Moreover, the grower still had a permit to build, but it was in danger of expiring. As the back of the farm in Rijkevorsel is against the greenery, he estimates that there is little chance of building in the future. It makes the now 45-year-old grower take the step now.

Looije Agro Technics provided the permit, purchase guidance and construction management for the project, for which the materials from the demolished greenhouse will get a second life.
