US: Sharing secrets for tunnel growing success

How can New York growers meet the Northeast's year-round demand for fresh greens and herbs despite season changes not suitable for such production?

At Carlos Aguilera's West Haven Farm in Ithaca, New York, planning, prep and high tunnels help him do just that.

And in addition to fulfilling a less competitive market, shoulder season growing offers benefits, like reduced pest pressure, Aguilera said at the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York's Winter Conference on Jan. 18.

But a lot of planning and preparation are necessary to be successful. In terms of physical prep, flat, well-drained locations are critical for high tunnels to function.
