At Carlos Aguilera's West Haven Farm in Ithaca, New York, planning, prep and high tunnels help him do just that.
And in addition to fulfilling a less competitive market, shoulder season growing offers benefits, like reduced pest pressure, Aguilera said at the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York's Winter Conference on Jan. 18.
But a lot of planning and preparation are necessary to be successful. In terms of physical prep, flat, well-drained locations are critical for high tunnels to function.
