India: Campaign to promote chemical free farming launches with seed kit

Emphasizing the importance of homegrown, chemical-free vegetables for a healthier lifestyle, Deputy Commissioner of Ferozepur, Deepshikha Sharma, launched a Mini Kit for Summer Vegetable Seeds under the Mission Tandrust Punjab initiative. She highlighted that vegetables are rich sources of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytochemicals that strengthen the immune system and help combat diseases.

The Punjab Horticulture Department has introduced these affordable mini kits to encourage households to grow fresh, organic vegetables. These kits, available at a subsidized price of ₹80, contain seeds for okra, bottle gourd, cucumber, pumpkin, ridge gourd, cowpea (lobia), round gourd (tinda), ash gourd, musk melon, and bitter gourd. With just 4-5 marlas (approx. 100-125 square meters) of land, a family can meet its vegetable requirements for the season.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Director of Horticulture, Dr. Balkar Singh, emphasized the importance of a balanced diet as per the National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, recommending a daily intake of 300 grams of fresh vegetables, including 120 grams of leafy greens, 90 grams of root vegetables, and 90 grams of other vegetables.

DC Sharma encouraged residents to adopt kitchen gardening and make use of the mini kits to reduce dependency on market produce contaminated with harmful chemicals. She urged citizens to collect their kits from the district horticulture department office and contribute to a healthier, self-sustained lifestyle.
