Spanish tomato production has fallen by almost 19% in a decade

Between 2014 and 2023, Spanish and Dutch fresh tomato production decreased by 18.83% and 19.93%, respectively. In the same period, Moroccan, Turkish, and French productions increased by 17.36%, 12.24%, and 7.90% respectively, according to an analysis by Hortoinfo based on FAOSTAT data.

Hortoinfo's analysis highlights the tomato production changes in key countries that compete in the EU, the Spanish tomatoes' main market. According to FAOSTAT's data, Spain went from producing 4,888.88 million kilos of tomatoes in 2014 to 3,968.46 million kilos in 2023. Meanwhile, the Netherlands went from producing 900 million kilos in 2014 to 726 million kilos in 2023.

In contrast, Turkey's tomato production increased from 11,850 million kilos in 2014 to 13,300 million kilos in 2023; Morocco's increased from 1,230.95 million kilos in 2014 to 1,444.68 million kilos in 2023; and French production grew from 608.14 million kilos in 2014 to 656.19 million kilos in 2023.
