"President Donald Trump's first executive decisions have swept away the prevailing paradigms of sustainability. Simply put, the United States has further reduced its already minimal packaging production costs, while Europe has continued to witness an increase. The question is whether the European Union will continue on its current course, or whether it will address the concerns of companies," says Rocco De Lucia, owner of Siropack, an Italian company that develops packaging technologies and exports to the US and Canada.
"Trump's decisions will also affect the European sector. If the EU goes ahead with its protocols, our competitiveness will decline, both concerning emerging countries and more established countries. Moreover, the EU accounts for only 6% of global carbon dioxide emissions, compared to 30% for China, 11% for the US and 7.8% for India. On the other hand, the impact of the measures adopted by the EU to reduce CO2 is detrimental to companies, while it is irrelevant in terms of concrete results against global pollution."

"The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)," continues De Lucia, "deals primarily with waste (or, to be more precise, only a part of waste), which is the last sector when it comes to CO2 equivalent emissions (and also when it comes to greenhouse gas emissions). We are therefore attacking a sector and a territory that have an insignificant impact on total GHG emissions, penalizing the competitiveness of Italian companies on a global scale, while the Big Tech giants operate without any restrictions, investing heavily and buying up all kinds of electricity, regardless of the origin of this energy. It makes us smile to see this kind of leniency that Europe has introduced with the so-called green certificates."
