The strawberry season in Huelva got underway in November with the first harvests and there has been good demand, which is very positive for the growers who have invested more in the crop this season, as is the case of the Cuna de Platero cooperative.
"This year we expect our strawberry volumes to grow by between 10 and 12%. This is a product that we are able to grow ourselves 52 weeks a year thanks to our crops in Avila, which we can resort to when it isn't possible to have any production in Huelva," says Sergio Sainz, Sales Director of Cuna de Platero, which last year produced around 50 million kilos of berries.
So far, the strawberry supply has been limited in Huelva. "We are satisfied with the start of the strawberry season; there has been good demand. This season we have more fruit available and the quality is good, so we'll be able to seek new market opportunities," says Sainz.
In the coming weeks, the strawberry supply will increase in Huelva and Cuna de Platero will continue to focus on offering continuity in the supply to its clients. "We are working constantly. We don't focus on specific seasons; our main asset is stability and reliability in the berry supply all year round."
"As far as raspberries are concerned, last year there was a moment in the season, in November and December, when there was noticeable competition from third countries, given their remarkable production volumes. However, that didn't affect us so much thanks to our strong position. Now, we are facing this stage of the season with winter raspberries, which will allow us to maintain stability and reliability in the supply to our clients."
As far as blueberries are concerned, although the overseas supply still dominates the markets, Cuna de Platero is already carrying out the first harvests and sales of blueberries from Huelva, for which it is looking for specific niches that appreciate their unique qualities.
