Tomato price recovery in week 52

In the last week of 2024, VBT middle prices rose for cucumbers and tomatoes. Prices for head lettuce and oakleaf lettuce also increased while the middle price for strawberries remained the same as the previous week.

The rise in prices brings the middle price for vine tomatoes back above the five-year average at the close of 2024 after a dip in mid-December. For loose tomatoes, over €1.62 per kilo still confesses a narrowly below-average price for the time of year. Vine tomatoes recorded 1.73 euros per kilo.

For a cucumber, an average of over 86 euro cents per piece was paid. A single grower is already in production and around this time quite a few more cucumber growers with exposure are coming into production. The cucumber price in week 52 is sharply higher than in the past two years when there was less exposure.

Like cucumber, head lettuce is also experiencing an upturn. However, with a unit price of 70 euro cents, the middle price of week 52 cannot match the 92 euro cents of 2023.

The strawberry market closed the year with a middle price of 8.42 euros per kilo. A price equal to the week before and neatly between the 2022 (lower) and 2023 (higher) prices. At Coöperatie Hoogstraten, one of the VBT auctions, they are talking about pre-corona production levels again for the first time this winter. Currently, production levels are lower, but from mid-January, production levels are expected to increase again.
