Germany: Laboratory building focuses efficiency and sustainability

Böhm-Nordkartoffel Agrarproduktion GmbH & Co. OHG has started building a new, state-of-the-art laboratory in Ebstorf, Lower Saxony, to meet the constantly growing requirements. "We are increasingly reaching our limits with our current capacities," says Dr Justus Böhm, Managing Director of Böhm-Nordkartoffel. Steady growth of the EUROPLANT Group, legal changes and new technologies and equipment that require different space are the reasons for the new building. "Previously, the work was spread across various locations - these will now be brought together in one central building," Böhm continues.

After an intensive two-year planning phase, during which all work processes, routes, and materials were analyzed in detail, civil engineering work began at the end of April. Construction of the two-story building is scheduled to take 18 months, with completion planned for summer 2025.

The new building covers a usable area of 2,000 square meters and includes a PCR laboratory, hygiene sluice and climate chamber as well as offices and social rooms. The new laboratory will significantly improve work processes and working conditions. "We've only heard positive things from the employees - they're really looking forward to the move," says Dr Justus Böhm.

A particular focus of the project is on sustainability: the energy-intensive building will be equipped with a photovoltaic system and corresponding battery storage units to generate a large proportion of the electricity required from in-house production. In addition, modern ventilation technology with heat recovery will be integrated to further increase energy efficiency. A collection basin for rainwater rounds off the environmentally friendly concept.

The new building represents a milestone for Böhm-Nordkartoffel, enabling it to use pioneering technologies efficiently in an optimized, sustainable environment.
