The French tomato market is currently experiencing a shortage, particularly in round tomatoes. This is largely due to seasonal factors. "By mid-September, the plants are more fatigued, resulting in a drop in production," explains one industry expert. Although supplies from southern countries like Spain and Morocco arrived slowly. They are now beginning to enter the French market. Despite demand not being particularly high, prices "remain fairly strong" for this time of year, driven by an even larger production shortfall than last year.
This shortfall is partly due to "some growers uprooting their plants now to replant for winter supply. Last year, with high energy costs and geopolitical uncertainties, many opted not to plant in winter, instead choosing to extend the life of their plants through the end of the summer season."
