Expensive cucumbers in Russia's Far East

Chukotka has topped the anti-rating of regions for the high cost of cucumbers among the Far Eastern regions of Russia. The average annual cost of cucumbers in Chukotka reached 8.2 euros. In the Magadan Region, which claimed the second spot regarding cucumber prices, the vegetables are priced at 5.7 euros per kilogram.

Taking the third position is Kamchatka, with a price amounting to 4.5 euros.

According to official data, the Buryatia and the Jewish Autonomous Oblast had the lowest prices for cucumbers, which was 1.9 euros per kilogram.

For several years, the authorities of Kamchatka have been promising residents a 1.5-2 times reduction in prices for cucumbers and tomatoes, along with an improvement in product quality. Officials aim to achieve this through the construction of a large greenhouse complex. According to earlier statements, the completion of the project and the commencement of deliveries were planned for 2023, but this has not yet happened.

Officials attribute the high cost of products to high air transportation tariffs and once again promise that the greenhouse complex for growing vegetables in the closed ground will start operating in the fall of 2024.
