Antigo High School celebrated the completion of a $125,000 renovation of the Wirz Greenhouse and held a large open house in the Career and Technical Education wing on Thursday evening, Dec. 14.
“Without repairs, the spring of 2023 would have been our last growing season,” said Shalynn Domke, an agriculture teacher who took a leading role in the project. “About a year ago, we identified our concerns, which included outdated heating and cooling systems, weathered polycarbonate panels and a broken control system.”
Domke said she toured two educational greenhouses to see firsthand the modern-day updates for industrial buildings. “Over the course of a few months, we met with contractors and received bids.” After the Antigo School Board approved the greenhouse renovation early this year, the next challenge was funding.
Mike Parizek, a metals manufacturing teacher, said the projected cost was $125,000. “We sat down and wrote letters to local businesses. Our fundraising campaign started in February of 2023 and by August of 2023 we had met and exceeded our goal of $125,000. We cannot thank everyone enough for all their financial support. Without it, this project would not have been possible,” Parizek said.
