"Although volumes are still limited, we are processing around 7 thousand punnets a day, most of which with the distributor brand. We supply around twenty supermarkets in general but while, up until last year, only one or two chains preferred branded products, the figure has doubled over the past month," reports Giuseppe Zuccarella (in the photo below) from OP Zuccarella in Scanzano Jonico (Matera), Italy.
According to Giuseppe, private label products continue to grow as the trend generates advantages for all the subjects involved: chains, producers and final consumers, who can spend less as private label products cost 20-25% less than other brands.
"We are planning supplies with other Italian and foreign chains, especially German and French ones. While supermarkets have their name on the produce, producers must guarantee constant volumes throughout the campaign. It becomes a relationship based on trust and collaboration: we undertake to guarantee frequent deliveries also during the first part of the season, while buyers guarantee that they won't speculate during peaks. Everything has gone well so far: demand is high and plug orchards are in good health: harvested quantities increased by 15-20% in one month. Six varieties are currently being harvested."
