Both the Spanish and Israeli bell pepper seasons are in full swing at the Dutch company Gilad Produce. "The war means there are fewer flights available from Israel. There's also a shortage of workers to harvest and pack all the bell peppers, but we're still receiving the necessary volumes," says Frank Mosterd.
"The current demand from the United States and Canada is extremely high, so we're shipping plenty of Spanish and Israeli produce there. The Canadian production ended at the same time as the Dutch season, and there's still some product available from Mexico. We can perfectly fill that gap. Fortunately, the exchange rate is becoming more favorable. Bell pepper prices aren't bad for this time of the year, especially those we can sell overseas."
"This week, we're receiving the last Dutch bell peppers of the season. That season started very poorly but ended well, although prices have dropped compared to recent weeks. We've also restarted the Spanish bell pepper production," says Frank. Gilad Produce started with mini cucumbers from Spain a month ago. "They're selling like hotcakes. There are few of these, but their prices are excellent."
Preparations for the new Dutch greenhouse vegetable season have also started. "We want to expand our acreage further next season. We're strong in bell peppers, chilies, and mini cucumbers and would like to grow further, acreage-wise. We want to add extra products to our assortment, too," Frank concludes.
