Pepper grower 4Evergreen seeks CO2 partner: "Not dependent on fickle market"

Grower Dennis Grootscholte of 4Evergreen is looking for CO2 for the large pepper company with several locations in the Netherlands. While large industrial companies, among others, are struggling with CO2 as a waste product, growers in horticulture can put it to good use. Therefore, Dennis placed an appeal on X, formerly Twitter.

"We are looking particularly for partners for our location in Sint-Annaland and in Steenbergen," he explains. "We have no external CO2 at our disposal here. We are therefore looking for a partner to set up a 1-to-1 line with so that we are not dependent on the fickleness of the market."

The pepper growers have their own CO2 facilities at all sites, mostly CHPs or boilers "as a last resort." "But you don't really want to use that boiler anymore," he says. For the Zeeuws-Vlaanderen site, 4Evergreen counts on backup tanks.

External party
Those who want to attract external CO2 without a pipeline network can turn to various suppliers. They deliver CO2 to growers in tanks. However, Dennis' experience is that they do not always have CO2 available or at highly fluctuating costs.

"My vision is to make arrangements with a partner to optimize together. Then you can make CO2 when the time is right and also decide together not to make it for a while if it becomes far too expensive."

Certainty
Initially, 4Evergreen is looking at Sint-Annaland and Steenbergen. "The best thing would be to find a partner in between Steenbergen and our location in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Ideally, no more than an hour's drive from our companies."

Meanwhile, Dennis is already looking further afield, as there is no certainty elsewhere either. "In Steenbergen, we hope to eventually be able to use Osiris, but until then, we will have to bridge a period of time. In Westland, we have OCAP, but even there, the supply is not always certain. And in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, the future also remains uncertain. Through a 1-to-1 collaboration with a partner, we could possibly use the CO2 from one site for other sites as well if needed."
