Tens of thousands of heads of lettuce have been coming off the production line in the brand-new greenhouse in Vettweiß (NRW) for about four months. A climate computer ensures that the plants feel comfortable and grow. A robot keeps repotting the lettuces. Above ground in plastic gutters. "We can move super many plants here in a very small space, so the workflows also make sense," Elisabeth Graaff, the 27-year-old managing director of Rheinlandgemüse Hydro GmbH & Co. KG, told RTL.

Currently, the company focuses mainly on colorful lettuces with root balls (FreshPlaza.de reported). In the fall and winter, other types of lettuce are then produced that would otherwise have to be imported. The company supplies food retailers throughout Germany.
