Tomato grower considers to combine cultivation with watermelons

At tomato grower De Bakker Westland in Kwintsheul, they are getting serious about the watermelons the growers have been growing for several years. At first purely for fun, but demand is proving to be high. So says grower Bart de Bakker in the Algemeen Dagblad.

Last year, the growers already decided to fill 10 percent of their greenhouse at the Bovendijk with watermelons. This year, demand was even so high that they rented an extra piece of greenhouse externally.

"Of course, watermelons are only a temporary product. You can grow tomatoes all year round. We are going to think about whether we might do combination cultivation. The question is whether we can make that profitable. But in any case, the product is being received with great enthusiasm."

Roel de Bakker playfully praised the first 2023 Dutch watermelons this spring. The melons were auctioned for charity.
