The Ukrainian greenhouse vegetable season began one and a half months later than usual, beginning at the end of April. Some greenhouse complex managers believe that this delay is due to the lack of electricity in winter, which hindered the normal functioning of farms. Others attribute the large greenhouse production crisis to the pressure of imports from Turkey, which bring in cheaper produce.
Sergei Shevchenko, director of the greenhouse complex in central Ukraine, believes that the market situation for the Ukrainian greenhouse segment is not the worst. He asserts that crop yield is typically influenced by weather conditions and the expertise of agronomists. As for demand, prices and imports significantly influence it. Due to the reduction in imports caused by the war, prices for cucumbers and tomatoes remain high.
However, other factors impacted the industry this year, such as prices for fertilizers, fuel, and other energy sources. The amount of greenhouse products was reduced by the occupation of parts of Kherson and Zaporizhia.
