Juan Luis Jimenez Martinez, technical director of Originalius and CEO of Caliplant Group:

“We've strengthened our presence in the United States with our a la carte substrates for blueberry and greenhouse horticulture”

Originalius, a division of the Caliplant Group that designs, manufactures, and markets agricultural products and technology, together with its North American partner Florep, has strengthened its privileged position in the substrates sector in the United States thanks to its proposal to develop on-demand products according to the needs of its customers.

“We have great influence in the nursery and ornamental sector, where we have technically supported and helped important players to evolve towards more efficient and sustainable substrates. Now, we are consolidating our position in the high-tech greenhouse berry and horticultural sector with our improved substrate designs adapted to the specific needs of our customers,” stated Juan Luis Jimenez Martinez, technical director of Originalius and CEO of Caliplant Group.

In the case of blueberries, the company is doing so with its new Originalius Blueberry King Extra-Drain blend. “This blend was designed at the request of customers who demanded a substrate with greater aeration and better drainage while maintaining a high reserve of readily available water and nutrients. Other requirements were that it had greater stability over time and that it could be reused at the end of the culture. All the proposed objectives were achieved with Originalius Blueberry King Extra-Drain, which is also a more efficient and sustainable substrate,” Juan Luis stressed.

Originalius is present in the most important blueberry-producing countries, such as Morocco, Europe, Peru, and Chile. It is also being introduced in other markets, such as Mexico, China, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Egypt, and South Africa.

“In addition to Originalius Blueberry King Extra-Drain, the company has other outstanding blends for container production, such as Originalius Blueberry King and Origiinalius Berry Tech, nursery production (Blueberry Start), and the Originalius Up Pot of 30x30x30 cm of 100% coconut fiber so producers can produce directly without the need for a pot or other containers,” Juan Luis stated.

In the case of horticulture in high-tech greenhouses, the company has designed a grow bag to replace the production of rock wool substrate while maintaining its handling conditions.

“It is a 100% coconut fiber grow bag with dimensions adapted to each client and with a very porous and draining structure that allows us to make short and frequent waterings and control all pH and electrical conductivity (EC) parameters just like in a crop produced in rock wool,” the CEO of Caliplant said.

“It provides greater thermal inertia, which reduces the energy needs to heat or cool, than rock wool. It has a greater buffering effect, which absorbs errors or problems in fertigation without the crop being affected, and is a substrate that can be easily reused for various uses at the end of the crop,” he added.
