Growing tomatoes year-round in challenging Japanese climate

Since the end of 2022, Certhon has been working on a new horticulture project in Shirakawa, Japan, in collaboration with joint venture DENSO AgriTech Solutions. We are building a high-tech tomato greenhouse with an area of 2.3 hectares for the Salad Bowl Group, with the aim of producing top-quality tomatoes all year round, regardless of the challenging climate conditions.

Achieving consistent tomato quality throughout the year in Shirakawa, Japan, where temperatures can drop below freezing in winter and summers are warm and humid, requires state-of-the-art technology. This greenhouse contains all the necessary advanced technology to meet the challenges of the climate and ensure constant production of top-quality tomatoes. For instance, Certhon has made the construction earthquake-resistant due to the high risk of earthquakes in the area. Additionally, the greenhouse has a double screen, consisting of an energy screen and a shade screen. The glazing contains low-iron diffuse glass with 10% haze, which optimally distributes sunlight in the greenhouse. Moreover, induction paths have been built to enable harvest carts to be driven from the greenhouse to the processing area, either manually or autonomously.
