National Retail Report - specialty crops

Sweet onions, colored bell peppers and zucchini well advertised

Warmer weather brought US shoppers into stores to purchase long-awaited favorites. New crop corn and sweet onions were popular options for grilling, along with colored bell peppers and zucchini. Both organic and conventional avocados were well-advertised, along with tomatoes, onions, and jalapenos for fresh salsa. Mangoes, cantaloupes, new crop watermelons, and strawberries were plentiful for fruit salads or refreshing beverages.

Mother's Day was mentioned in a few flyers but the bulk of the promotions are expected to be seen in the next two weeks. Total ad numbers this week were 258,500, a 15% increase from last week's total of 224,764. The total for the same week last year was 8% higher than for this year. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 129,596 (50% of all ads), onions and potatoes 24,058 (9%), vegetables 100,750 (39%), herbs 951, ornamentals 1,155, and hemp 1,990.
