Nova Siri Genetics opens the doors to the strawberry and berry research and experimentation center

One year after the official opening, Nova Siri Genetics (NSG) reopened the doors of the hub that gathers the company's research and experimentation activities. The event took place on March 31 after a two-day event that focused on strawberries.

The Italian strawberry and berry breeding group wants to turn the appointment into a tradition, an important moment of comparison with company experts to analyze technical and environmental factors as well as market evolutions.

Starting from 9, Italian and foreign visitors (Polish, Spanish, and Australian) visited the research lab, the 500 square meter greenhouse, and the 10 square meter experimental fields, which feature the advanced selections of new potential strawberry varieties.

Carmela Suriano explains that "to us, it is important to understand production and market dynamics to better orientate research. There is particular attention from all company subjects, as the European and global strawberry sector is going through a period of change. Strawberry consumption is increasing, and the Mediterranean basin is showing great dynamism, at different speeds depending on the country and with Morocco in the lead."

"Although several years have passed, people still think strawberries can also be eaten in April/May. We are working to make consumers perceive that the fresh strawberries found on the market in November and January are actually fruit of the research of the past 20 years. We need to deseasonalize and raise the awareness of those who purchase the produce."

What was set up in 2005 as a small breeding company is now a dynamic company with an entrepreneurial vision known not only in Europe but also in Africa and in America. Breeder Nicola Tufano commented that "we are working well with berries too. In fact, after long research, we have our first raspberry cultivar in the greenhouse. It is a selection we will patent soon, as it is in an advanced stage, and it is characterized by sweetness, a nice aroma, and a long shelf-life. It will be the first raspberry variety patented in southern Italy."

"We would like to repeat the event every year as as to meet up with the players from the various areas where we are present. We can already tell you that the focus of the next edition will be the South American markets."
