Costs too high:

Germany: Gera-Aga organic farm no longer grows cucumbers

The organic farm in Gera-Aga has stopped growing cucumbers in the greenhouse. The reason is the high energy costs, as Steven Bohn from the organic farm told MDR THÜRINGEN. Cucumbers are very sensitive to temperature, he said, so other crops are now being grown: lettuces, zucchini, and mini-melons. These plants need less permanent heat.

Temperatures in the greenhouse significantly reduced at night
Accordingly, tomatoes remain in the range, but they come into the ground later than usual. The night temperature in the greenhouse, which is one of the largest of its kind in Germany, will be reduced from 17 to ten degrees. Biohof Aga hopes that the changeover to the new crops will be accepted by customers.

People with disabilities have been working in the greenhouse for eleven years. The Biohof is one of the operating facilities for Lebenshilfe Gera. Currently, 36 people with disabilities work in the greenhouse as well as in packing.
