H2Horto brand can count on 20 hectares in production and 10 more on the way

Hydroponic tomatoes seeking more ground in central and southern Italy's large-scale retail sector

Within a few months, another 10 hectares of greenhouses in hydroponic cultivation at Fri-El Green House in Ostellato (Ferrara) will come into production. This means that the total production will rise to 30 hectares, most of which will be dedicated to tomatoes. This is what Florian Gostner, administrator, said about the company's newest developments.

"In addition to energy self-sufficiency," said the CEO, "we are consolidating, year after year, the position of our products in most of the large-scale distribution. Not only in northern Italy but also in central and northern Europe. The main goal for 2023 is to significantly increase the market share in Italy." In addition to tomatoes, we are testing the same technique in the same greenhouses for growing cucumbers, zucchini, eggplant, peppers, and melons."

Compared to the market share both in Italy and abroad and since the beginning of the year, Gostner says that "In the summer we have 65 percent sales in Italy and 35 percent abroad, while in the winter the shares vary, with 45 percent Italy and 55 percent abroad. Germany and Austria are the two main countries where export takes place."

Profitability remains satisfactory because the greenhouses, in order to be heated, use energy derived from adjacent biogas plants, cogenerators, and photovoltaics. "In December," adds the CEO, "the market declined, and the demand was low. In any case, the 2022 average is satisfactory, but in the last four months of last year, there was a significant drop in prices."

"In these early months of the year," concluded Gostner, "the demand for our tomatoes has been stable, in line with our agenda."
