Southwest Japan: Growers start harvesting white strawberries

Currently, growers in southwestern Japan are busy harvesting a strawberry variety that comes in white. Five farms in Karatsu City in Saga Prefecture grow the prized fruit. The white strawberries with red seeds have a mild sweetness and aromatic flavor. Big ones can sometimes fetch more than 700 yen, or around 5 dollars, apiece.

Local grower Ide Shigeo developed this rare variety. He says this year's crop has received plenty of sunshine since planting in September, giving them a sweet flavor and pleasant aroma. The fruit is sold at local farm stands and department stores in Tokyo and its surrounding region. Some are also exported to Hong Kong.
