Gioacchino Russo's experience from Sicily

Taking aim at specialities to stand out from the crowd

In an increasingly flooded market, making a difference is the only option to stand out from the crowd. And it is precisely with this spirit that Gioacchino Russo, owner of the farm of the same name, with production headquarters in Marina di Acate (RG, Sicily), has found a way to make a difference in an irregular and, at times, unreliable market, when it comes to a company's need for certainty.

Production expenses are an increasingly unwieldy item when compared to the investment needed to tackle a campaign in which there is no certainty about actual revenues.

Order and cleanliness excel in this company

The only way out is to have distinctive products that, regardless of what is happening on the market, can have that extra edge that will open a way among commercial niches, a genuine comfort zone of high quality.

"It is high-performance requirements that must be aimed at in order to disengage from the standard market," said Gioacchino Russo. "These are products and varieties that can maximize the return on investments. Of course, there are a lot of economic sacrifices and hard work that goes from theory to actually accomplishing. This is not an easy path, which requires meticulous attention to detail, from varietal choice to commercial relations, including production techniques that are mastered only after years of experience and a lot of dedication. Last but not least, external advice from good professionals with whom I collaborate is very important."

Russo has been growing specialty tomatoes for several years now, often changing varieties to ensure that they are always trending and responsive to the market, especially in the colored segment.

Mixed boxes to meet the expectations of the Horeca sector. The Russo company is GlobalGAP, GRASP, and Nickel Free certified. The latter is thanks to some plots grown above ground.

"We essentially aim to meet the demands of our foreign customers such as Great Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany," explains Russo, "who demand from us high-quality cherry tomatoes, almost always delicacies, destined for a very small circle of customers, usually restaurants and luxury hotels. Our tomatoes are used for the preparation of special dishes, and for this reason, they must not only be aesthetically appealing in shape and texture but must also meet uncommon taste criteria."

Mixed varieties for high-end customers

"We often make batches of two, three or more varieties that are very unique in color and shape according to customers' requests," continues the entrepreneur, "but always taking into account the shelf life and the preservation of organoleptic properties, even after several days, because our products also travel long distances."

"We are, in fact gearing up to meet some requests for destinations outside Europe," Gioacchino Russo concludes, "which can only travel by air. These are the tourism destinations in the Middle East, where we plan to arrive soon through our foreign business partners, who have urged us to do so."
