VBT figures week 8

Peak of greenhouse vegetable prices is over, supplied volumes still low

Tomato prices have started to fall again after reaching record highs. With that, the tip of the price spike is off in week 8. Medium prices for loose (EUR 2.76) and trusses (EUR 3.60) are still high at VBT. The same also remains true for the cucumber price. The unit price here is still above 1 euro.

For both tomato and cucumber, prices in week 8 at the auctions of the Federation of Belgian Horticultural Cooperatives are also well above the five-year average and also still well above the already high prices from 2022.

The drop in tomato prices is accompanied by an increase in volumes supplied. The supply of loose tomatoes is 2 times lower than in 2022. For vine tomatoes in week 8, it is still 7 times lower than in 2022.

Most greenhouse vegetable growers have yet to come into production. This is certainly true for sweet peppers, but also strawberries, where prices are also at very high levels.

The lettuce price is also high, but here, like tomato, the peak did come down last week.
