Substantial part of vegetable production is marketed by mid-May

Harvest starts for greenhouse lettuces on the island of Reichenau

In the greenhouses on the island of Reichenau, the harvest of the first leaf lettuces is now starting successively. By mid-May, there will be more than 1,000,000 heads of lettuce, almost 700,000 heads of cabbage lettuce, and another 400,000 heads of lettuce. Not only main products of the vegetable island but also already a really large portion of the annual total production of the Reichenau vegetables of altogether 14,000 tons left than the Bodensee island, the Reichenau vegetable EEC states in a press release.

These regional vegetable products are offered to a broad clientele. They can be found in well-stocked grocery stores, wholesalers, or at weekly markets. According to the cooperative, the first lettuces of 2023 are only slightly more expensive than last year.

Christian Müller (r), deputy managing director of the cooperative, inquires on-site in the greenhouse about the quality of the first heads of lettuce.

In addition to the Baden-Württemberg quality mark (QZ BW), Reichenau lettuces also bear the European Union's ggA label. Geographically protected indication is a very clear indication that cultivation and origin take place according to prescribed and controlled specifications on and from the vegetable island.
