US (CT): Students build aquaponics system

Students taking Fundamentals of Aquaponics at Shepaug Valley High School are discovering that the fun, new class is about more than planting seeds and growing produce.

The class, part of the school's Agriscience Program, also teaches students a sustainable way to grow food and allows them to give back to their community by donating the food that is grown to the New Milford Food Bank. 

"I found the concept really interesting, and I think it's something that will be put into use in the future – the idea of using hydroponics and aquatics to grow crops for our growing population," said student Maya Paixao, 15. "You learn a lot of information that's applicable anywhere."

The class was also "a lot of fun," Paixao said. "It was a lot of work, but we really feel like we accomplished a lot in the end."
