Strongest frosts in 10 years damages harvest in south Kazakhstan

Greenhouse owners complain massively about the lack of coal and its poor quality in Shymkent and Turkestan region of Kazakhstan. Coal does not provide the necessary heat to the greenhouses, Otyrar.kz reports.

There have not been such frosts in the region for the past ten years, the greenhouse workers say. They were not ready for the cold. Entrepreneurs say that the plants did not survive the frost due to the lack and poor quality of coal.

"Charcoal does not provide a normal heat. We simply cannot heat the greenhouses to the temperature we need. Therefore, the harvest was lost," assistant greenhouse manager Serik Mustafayev says.

Only one farm suffered losses of more than 100 million tenge. Entrepreneurs have nothing to cover the loans they have taken for business development. Dozens of greenhouse owners have such a problem not only in Shymkent, but also in Turkestan region. They say that night frosts reached -20C. The crop died from the cold.

"We have to collect 1,200-1,300 tons. But it will turn out to be only about 250 tons. Everything else is just tossed out," agronomist Merey Terlikbaev says.
