In a recent episode of the Tea Podcast, host Ben Powers interviewed Camille Schuneman, owner of Cajun Acres Hydroponic Greenhouse, a new age, female-operated business of farming lettuce for the local restaurants in the Acadiana region, Lafayette, US.
During the interview, the two discussed an array of topics related to hydroponic cultivation and its benefits, all the while keeping the light-hearted conversation going. However, Camille also talked about how the growing population and increase in food demand requires growers to make better use of resources and land.
At Cajun Acres Hydroponic Greenhouse, they currently use one-sixth of the fertilizer a regular farmer would use and one-tenth of the water. The climate in the greenhouse can also be controlled, and they have better pest control than you would have in regular field cultivation. All of this combined results in a harvest of 100 pounds of lettuce a week.
