A new research polycarbonate greenhouse is under construction in Saudi Arabia. This research station is led by a professor from King Saud University, and this project belongs to "Saudi Vision 2030," which is the Saudi National Development Plan.
This project will focus on the desert plant growing research and comparing during commercial production. It adopts five different growing systems to test the growing technology, such as hanging gutters and Dutch buckets in the desert climate, and how to reach the best growing climate by controlling of the micro-climate inside the greenhouse.
Saudi Arabia is a country with sandy land and salty water, which is a big obstacle for big-scale farming. Until now, most of the vegetables and grains of Saudi Arabia are imported from other countries, and COVID-19 affected a lot on the food supply chain for the whole country.
That's why the project "Saudi Vision 2030" was started. Agriculture is seen as one of the most important parts to protect the food security of the kingdom.
In the past ten years, hundreds of hectares of greenhouse have been built in Saudi Arabia, and these projects are playing a more and more critical role in the local food supply system.
