Strawberry grower expects to have to introduce winter break

Thanks to the current infrastructure (with some exposed cultivation), strawberry growers Luc Krijnen and Ann Hereijgers of Gestelberries can grow almost year-round. "But because of sky-high energy prices, we might not be able to do that this year," Luc sighs in an interview with Boer & Tuinder published by Boerenbond. "We heat with natural gas, so I fear we will have to stop around the turn of the year until we can start a new crop in March. We have to plant out the plants for the winter crop (January-February) as early as October, and they require heat and lighting all winter."
