Status of Almeria's greenhouse crops at the end of August

The Agricultural and Fisheries Information Service of the Andalusian Ministry of Agriculture has published a new report on the state of crops in the community, corresponding to the period from July 25 to August 28, in which it shares the situation of Almeria's greenhouses.

Most of the greenhouses in Nijar are being solarized during summer. Early plantings of zucchini and cucumber have had issues due to the high temperatures there's been. In fact, producers have had to uproot many of the crops, even though the greenhouses were shaded.

The first data indicate that there's going to be more tomatoes and less zucchini planted than last year. In the tomato greenhouses, this summer's heat has caused problems with burnt plants, both in greenhouses and in seedlings, so the plantation is being slightly delayed, but it has increased in recent days.

Pepper greenhouses have faced the same problems as tomato greenhouses: the farmers who removed the shading of their greenhouses have seen how the heat burnt their plants.

On cucumber plantations, the consequences of this hot summer have ranged from burnt plants to flower abortion.

Early zucchini plantations had some aphid issues. This campaign has seen an increase in the planting of varieties resistant to the New Delhi virus.

In the greenhouses of the West of Almeria, California, pepper transplants have continued, and those of the Lamuyo type has begun. Italian pepper plantations are generally lagging behind. The earliest plantations, in May and June, will begin to be harvested with the California types soon.

Tomato transplants began in August, but most of the greenhouses are finalizing the solarization of the soil and preparing the irrigation systems to receive the new winter plantations.

Most eggplant transplants have been performed and are in the early stages of cultivation. The Thelma variety is one of the most used, with a density of about 0.5 plants/m².

Some cucumber transplants have been performed, although most of the greenhouses will be planted in September.

Some cucumbers of the French, Spanish, and Almeria types are being harvested. The greenhouses used for courgette plantations carry out soil disinfection duties and repairs of the irrigation and structure installations (replacement of bands and anterooms).

Some white and green courgettes are being picked. More greenhouse green beans, both flat and round, have been planted. Prices are good, demand is rising, and supply is short.
