150,000 tomatoes end up on a California highway

A truck loaded with some 150,000 tomatoes caused chaos on a California highway; the truck overturned after an accident, after which the tomatoes landed on the road. According to a local police officer, the produce formed "a layer of over 60 centimeters" there.

Cars slipped in the sludge and collided with each other. The accident happened yesterday morning on a highway between San Francisco and Sacramento in the state of California.

Because the accident happened early in the morning, when it was still dark, passing motorists did not see what was on the road in front of them. One motorist got stuck in the tomato paste, after which another car collided with the car. Then, on the same stretch of road, several more accidents happened because people could not react in time. Seven cars were involved in the chain collision, and one driver had to go to the hospital with a broken leg. The others got away with minor injuries.

The highway remained closed for almost the entire day in the aftermath of the accident.
