It’s chili season once again in Lusk in Fingal, Ireland. Taylor’s of Lusk, a small family-run business, is once again harvesting their crop of pure Irish chilies. The farm has been running for generations, and four years ago started growing chilies. The idea was to cut down on chili imports and eliminate transport time, offering a fresher and tastier product.
Alan Taylor, co-owner of Taylor’s of Lusk, explains: “We’ve been growing chilies in Lusk since we started back in 2018. It’s very unusual to grow them in Ireland because I suppose they’re traditionally grown in hot countries. So we must try and mimic that in the glass house. That’s probably our biggest challenge from that end.”
Taylor’s chilies are picked from June till November until the farm runs out of sunlight and heat.
What makes Taylor’s chilies special, Taylor says, is that there are zero air miles involved, meaning they’re fresher and they’re local. They’re also creating employment for the 15 workers he has on-site, all living in the local Lusk community.
