US (NJ): Nonprofit provides Clifton and Paterson High School Students with an opportunity to grow

City Green, a nonprofit urban farming and gardening organization, hired 12 high school interns this summer to grow food and educate children in their community.

City Green's Growing Strong internship program provides high school students in Clifton and Paterson with a paid summer employment opportunity. Growing Strong interns support City Green's extensive summer programming by working as farm and market assistants or as summer camp counselors. Enhanced by a youth development program that ensures college and career readiness, Growing Strong interns develop a wide range of transferable skills while immersed in the fields of community-based agriculture, gardening, and nutrition security.

"The Growing Strong program connects teens with opportunities to engage with their community, develop career readiness skills, and foster connections with nature and the environment," Jenny Schrum, City Green's Director of Strategy & Evaluation, shared. "We're excited to welcome 12 students to the program this summer, four of which are returning from last season, indicating the valuable impact this program has on teens in our community."

"The Growing Strong Program is definitely one of the best opportunities I have crossed throughout my high school career so far," Growing Strong Junior Crew Leader Jada Witter shared. "It exposed me to the amazing organization that is City Green, and it led me to meet so many awesome people. I can't wait for this program to continue this summer so I can exercise my responsibility, leadership, and teamwork skills."
