Although the traditional summer slump is also slowly but surely setting in at the Hamburg wholesale market, certain vegetable crops from local cultivation continue to be well received, Matthias Bahn, Managing Director of the company of the same name at the Hamburg wholesale market, tells us. "New in the incoming goods are, for example, French beans, which we initially offer from southern German cultivation. In a few days, the first North German quantities from the regional producer are also expected to arrive with us. This item is traditionally very well received, especially at the weekly markets."
For 90 years now, the family business has been based in Hamburg's wholesale market, and over the years, Bahn has been able to develop into the place to go for selected vegetable products. As a greengrocer, Bahn has the wind in its back because regional vegetables are obviously in vogue: "Cauliflower and cucumbers from local cultivation are currently establishing themselves as self-runners. During the season, we mainly buy lettuce and cucumbers from selected regional growers and the Papenburg Horticultural Center. This regional guarantee of origin continues to be appreciated by our customers, who are mainly specialist retailers, market pickers, and restaurateurs," says Bahn.

Strong growth in mint and basil
Another trademark of the traditional company is potted herbs, which can be found at the wholesale stand all year round. Bahn says, "Regional produce from our regular growers arrived for the first time this year in early May and can usually be offered into October. Papenburg potted herbs are now available almost year-round. In winter, either Papenburg potted herbs or Italian goods sourced through direct imports are available to our customers. Across the range, mint and basil tend to be the most in-demand. We also see brisk demand for Italian rosemary throughout the year."
Despite the
impending summer slump, the wholesale market has boomed in the last two pandemic years, according to Bahn. "Our clientele, in particular, i.e., the specialist retail and weekly market trade, has established itself as particularly crisis-proof. Even today, we observe a positive trend."
