Irish infants win a greenhouse for their school

A bunch of budding gardeners in Portlaoise have won a greenhouse for their school. Excited senior infants at Portlaoise Educate Together NS celebrate the sweet success after winning the national Junior Incredible Edible Prize 2022.

The school proudly announced today: “Massive congratulations to Hazel’s Senior Infants Class … They were so proud to receive their certificate this week and are excited for September when they will receive the greenhouse they won for our school. Well done to everyone involved, and a special thank you to @AgriAware.”

The greenhouse will be a fantastic asset for the school, where green-fingered children love growing their own fruit and vegetables. The class had to submit a detailed logbook recording their planting, growing, and cooking of a variety of produce, as well as demonstrating knowledge of the origin and nutritive value of their food.

The Agri Aware Incredible Edibles program involves more than 40,000 primary schools nationwide in a healthy eating initiative funded by Bord Bia, Healthy Ireland, and the Irish horticulture industry. It encourages students across the country to grow their own fruit and vegetables and to learn about the nutritive value and origin of food.

Schools that register for the program receive seeds, plants, and the materials necessary to grow a variety of fruit and vegetables.
