Estonia: Supply chain challenges aside, demand for peat is skyrocketing

Several countries are encouraging the replacement of peat, but at the same time, the global demand for peat is constantly growing as certain economies get wealthier and can afford peat for their greenhouses,” says Kristel Tombak, Chief Executive Officer of Mikskaar AS, an Estonian peat company that harvests, packages and distributes peat globally.

As Mikskaar AS owns its own peat bogs, the company is involved in every step of the production process, from harvesting to delivery. Mikskaar cares deeply about the quality of its product and environmental responsibility.

“We have been making substrates for thirty years with raw materials from our own peatlands, which makes our greenhouse clients all over the world very happy. They continue ordering from us because they appreciate the quality and the fact that we own our peat bogs, which means that we can guarantee the quality and supply of our products,” says Kristel.

And while Mikskaar’s happy customers are numerous and located around the globe, rest assured that Mikskaar has enough peat to serve all interested growers, according to Kristel.

The fewer additives, the better
Whereas peat products for the hobby market tend to contain various additives, Mikskaar mostly serves professional growers who prefer peat moss with the minimum amount of additives. Other than the required wetting additions, fertilizers, and potentially mycorrhizae and Trichoderma, Mikskaar adds nothing to its peat. This, according to Kristel, allows the peat to show its best qualities.

The demand for Mikskaar’s product speaks to its qualities, as the high inflation levels in Estonia and high freight costs have done little to decrease the demand for Mikskaar peat moss. Kristel owes this to the company’s 30 years of experience in delivering high-quality peat and reliable peat products to its clients.

Mikskaar will be present at GreenTech (Booth 05.305) in Amsterdam and Cultivate in Ohio (Booth 2326).
