Sometimes, an event can change your entire life in an instant. It can be an awakening, and sometimes you'll acquire new knowledge. Ramveer Singh, a resident of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, has a similar story.
In 2009, Ramveer's friend's uncle got diagnosed with cancer.
The former full-time journalist, Ramveer decided to quit his job and dedicate his time to his ancestral land to grow organic vegetables. "The farm is 40 km away from Bareilly, and I traveled to grow the vegetables and increase the production on the land," he says.
He then started using pipes and other infrastructure to organize hydroponics systems in his balconies and open spaces. They established two methods for the farm using the nutrient film technique (NFT) and the deep flow technique (DFT). Currently, the farm is spread over 750 square meters of space, with more than 10,000 plants.
He grows okra, chilies, capsicum, bottle gourd, tomatoes, cauliflower, spinach, cabbage, strawberry, fenugreek, and green peas. "I grow all seasonal vegetables with hydroponics. The system is designed using PVC pipes and circulates the water with the help of gravity.
