"Tomatoes with good taste" are sought after by the market

"Tomatoes, as long as they are tasty, are easy to sell, and they are very popular among consumers." On the 17th of May, in a vegetable greenhouse in Gu'an County, Langfang City, Hebei Province, grower Zhang Yongqiao was busy harvesting tomatoes. In addition to selling online, his tomatoes are also sent to Beijing and surrounding vegetable wholesale markets.

In recent years, as consumer demand for tasty and nutritious tomatoes has increased and market conditions have changed, Zhang no longer simply pursues high yields but has begun to target the high-end market and take the route of high-quality fruits and vegetables.

"Tomatoes with a thin skin, thick flesh, juiciness, moderately sour and sweetness, have become the 'new pick' of current consumers." Zhang introduced that the Tiancuicui, Provence, and other varieties he planted have considerable benefits. March to May each year is the time when tomato production is at its highest.

At Uncle Carl's Happy Farm in Gu'an County, two main varieties, Tiancuicui and strawberry tomatoes, are ushering in the peak harvest one after another. " Tiancuicui has a thin and crisp skin, and it can be eaten as a fruit." Hu Shidan, the head of the farm, introduced that these two kinds of tomatoes are planted in steps in February, September, and October every year, and each crop will have a growth period of about two and a half months. The over-10-hectare of tomatoes on the farm are all planted in a step-by-step manner, which solves the problem of the out-of-stock period and ensures the uninterrupted supply of tomatoes.

Hu said that due to the impact of the pandemic, ripe tomatoes are now mainly shipped to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region by express, and orders are constantly being made every day.

The farm not only guides farmers to plant new varieties of tomatoes and apply new technologies but also provides employment places for surrounding villagers at their doorsteps. At present, there are more than 20 kinds of green leafy vegetables and seedlings and flowers planted on Uncle Carl's Happy Farm.
