The Yorkville City Council on Tuesday voted to approve a development agreement that paves the way for the construction of an industrial greenhouse that will produce lettuce at Eldamain and Corneils roads.
The agreement lays out how the city and lettuce producer BrightFarms will split the cost of expanding sewer service out to the site. The cost is estimated to be north of $3 million. The city will kick in $150,000. BrightFarms will pay for the rest. The city and the company are also waiting on a $1 million state grant to help fund the project.
Water use at the site led to two aldermen voting against the agreement. Aldermen Chris Funkhouser and Craig Soling say the proposed amount of water to be pumped, around 75 million gallons a year, is too much. The company has said that it will recover and reuse some water to reduce the amount it has to pump.
