VBT figures week 18

Free fall of greenhouse vegetable prices stopped, pepper prices still low

After two weeks of steeply declining greenhouse vegetable prices, the fall stopped last week, and the prices at the auctions of the Verbond van Belgische Tuinbouwcoöperaties (Federation of Belgian Horticultural Cooperatives) are cautiously rising again. Only the pepper prices are still lagging behind.

In week 18, an average of just over 1.01 euros was paid for a kilo of red peppers. The average price for yellow peppers was just over 87 euro cents. Green peppers sold for just over 1.62 euros per kilo. The prices of red and yellow (but also orange, with an average price of 1.29 euros) are below the five-year averages. Across the board, including green, the average price does not reach the five-year average either.

For cucumber and tomato, the average prices fell below the five-year averages last week, but the price has cautiously found its way back up again. With a unit price of 27 euro cents and a bit, the average price for week 18 was at the five-year average.

For both loose and vine tomatoes, the average price for week 18 is slightly above the five-year average and the prices of the past two years, but the volumes are still lower than in previous years. For vine tomatoes, the volume was just under 20% in week 18, and for loose tomatoes, it was over 10%.

The kilo price for aubergines also went up a little last week, as did that for green courgettes.

Lettuce prices per head

Lettuce prices, which initially escaped the pressure but dropped considerably last week, lost ground again. For field lettuce, the average price in week 18 is below the five-year average. The price of lamb's lettuce has been below the five-year average for almost the entire year. Only in weeks 17 and 18 did the price just exceed it.
